As a Toronto Raptors fan, I was torn when the team announced it acquired Rudy Gay from the Memphis Grizzles for Ed Davis and Jose Calderon. General manager Bryan Colangelo had continued his string of short-term-oriented transactions that would likely elevate his team to a low playoff seed at best. Once again BC had ignored the axiom of bottoming out in order to become a true contender; if you’re mediocre, you have no chance of getting past the first round or getting a high draft pick. With a minute to play in Game 1 of the their first round series against the Philadelphia 76ers, the Chicago Bulls‘ title chances in 2012 and 2013 were torn at the knee. Derrick Rose had blown out his anterior cruciate ligament, was out for the playoffs, and his return for next year was uncertain. Without its MVP and emotional leader, most presumed the Bulls would struggle to land a post season berth, let alone contend for the Eastern Conference title.
